Bible Meditation: A Definition

Biblical meditation is God-centered and found through meditating on the Bible with the purpose of shaping the inner man into the person Christ wants us to be. It’s an internal application of the Word of God in order that our outward behavior would be transformed into Christian conduct.

Simply put, it’s how we mature into strong Christians.

The Importance of Bible Meditation

Many people ponder if meditation has any place in the Christian religion. Is it okay for Christians to meditate? What exactly does Bible meditation mean? Is it something I should expose myself to as a Christian? We believe it’s not only okay to meditate as a Christian, but it’s a necessity. Meditating on the Bible is vital to maturing in your faith.

Examples of Meditation in the Bible

The Bible is full of examples of how people used meditation in their walk with God. This in turn had a serious effect on not only how they lived, but also how God used them to do amazing things. Consider some of the following verses:

  • Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.JOSHUA 1:8
  • Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night.PSALMS 1:1-2
  • May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.PSALMS 19:4
  • My mouth will speak words of wisdom; the meditation of my heart will give you understanding.PSALMS 49:3
  • May my meditation be pleasing to him, as I rejoice in the LORD.PSALMS 104:34
  • I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways.PSALMS 119:15
  • May the arrogant be put to shame for wronging me without cause; but I will meditate on your precepts.PSALMS 119:78
  • I remember the days of long ago; I meditate on all your works and consider what your hands have done.PSALMS 143:5
  • Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long. Your commands are always with me and make me wiser than my enemies. I have more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on your statutes.PSALMS 119:97-99
  • Then I thought, “To this I will appeal: the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand. I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds.PSALM 77:10-12
  • He went out to the field one evening to meditate, and as he looked up, he saw camels approaching.GENESIS 24:63
THE BIBLE IS INSPIRED

The Bible is the inspired Word of God. In other words, God wrote it. The Word of God tells us how to live and teaches us more about God. Each word is inspired, or God-breathed. Through careful study, you’ll learn what the words really mean and understand what God is telling you. Stoic Matchmaker provides tools and training to help you along the way in your journey. Our resource for all things in life is the Word of God.

The Practice of Bible Meditation

REGULARLY PRACTICE
REGULARLY PRACTICE

The practice of biblical meditation works the same as it always has in previous times. In order for biblical meditation to do a Christian any good, it must be put into regular practice.

BECOMES A PART OF WHO YOU ARE
BECOMES A PART OF WHO YOU ARE

This is where the problem lies. A casual reading of the Bible can only take you so far. It’s not until you apply it to a situation in your life that you actually grab hold of it and let it become a part of who you are. It’s the equivalent of studying to be a surgeon and an actual surgeon in the operating room.

INFUSE THE BIBLE INTO OUR LIVES
INFUSE THE BIBLE INTO OUR LIVES

We must be like the surgeon in the operating room. We’ve got to infuse the Bible into our lives, let it be our guide in this life and prepare us to be the people of God that He has called us to be.

INVEST THE NECESSARY TIME
INVEST THE NECESSARY TIME

In order to change who we are, we must transform into the new creation that we’ve become in Christ. It’s impossible for us to do that on our own. For us to make such a drastic change, we must invest the necessary time into meditating on the Bible and let the Holy Spirit do the work in us.

SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES
SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES

Stoic Matchmaker helps Christians meditate on the Bible efficiently in an effective manner. In order to live the life God wants us to live, we must search the Scriptures.

FEED ON THE BIBLE
FEED ON THE BIBLE

If you need help getting into the Word regularly, we’ll also encourage you to take the appropriate steps in your life so that you can. Feeding on the Bible and letting the words sink into your soul will springboard you into living differently with the help of the Holy Spirit. We know that His Word will not return void.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN INDUCTIVE BIBLE STUDY & BIBLICAL MEDITATION

Inductive Bible study uses three steps while studying the Bible. These are observation, interpretation, and application. An inductive Bible study helps guide the Christian through the passage to a conclusion and then asks how they can implement the conclusion into their own life.

Stoic Storytelling does a similar thing, except it begins with a particular situation where the Bible is then consulted for the answer. Since the Christian begins with a problem that is relevant to their life, the application part of Bible study is much easier. In addition to this, STOIC Storytelling helps solidify what was learned and applied. Telling others about your progress and actually applying the wisdom to your life ensures you won’t forget it.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BIBLE READING & BIBLICAL MEDITATION

Biblical meditation ensures that you dive deeper into the Bible than a mere casual reading. Through casual reading, a person may have times where what is read “hits home” and the reader does apply the findings to their life, but most of the time, it can be more impersonal and not necessarily pondered.

What Does Ponder Really Mean?

Pondering involves thinking or reflecting deeply upon something. It means to meditate, wonder, or contemplate. The Bible is to be all of those things. We must have the right heart attitude when we ponder the Bible. Our goal can’t be to simply get our Bible study out of the way or put a checkmark on our to-do list.

Pondering the Bible with the right heart means having a genuine desire to learn from the Word of God. It means diving into word meanings, the context of the passage we are reading and not only understanding what it means, but discovering how we can apply it to our own lives. In order for us to put the principles of God’s Word into practice, we must have a deep understanding of what the Bible is saying.

TRUSTING THE HOLY SPIRIT TO WORK IN YOU

All of our efforts would be in vain without the work of the Holy Spirit in our life. It is He who changes us. We must do the work of bringing the knowledge of God into our mind, grant the time and attention to the study of the Bible, but the Holy Spirit causes us to be transformed into the person God wants us to be. This is the mark of a true Christian—a person who is continually being changed by God.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. "Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night..."
Joshua 1:8
We view meditation as a spiritual concept because it is focused on God. There are many different types of meditation, even some that don’t include any spiritual components. However, for those seeking to have their minds renewed through the Bible, it is an essential practice.
Meditation helps you grow in your walk with God because you’re pondering what the Bible says about certain situations you read about or encounter. Meditating on how Scripture deals with these can help you gain perspective and enlightenment. Through consistent practice, you will be changed into a person who has been shaped by the Bible.
As it has been said many times before, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. The discipline of meditation is no different. With Stoic Matchmaker, you’ll find encouragement and growth along the way. Ultimately, the decision to meditate is yours alone to make, but we make it a smoother journey.
Reflecting on a situation bothering you using “The Virtues” & Journaling using our five sentence method is practical and very effective in calming your mind.
