How to Have a Healthy Relationship

There are many reasons people come together. Each relationship is unique. The foundation of a healthy relationship is the desire to reach the same goals and agree on the direction in which the relationship should take. Your partner will be able to tell you what they need only if you talk deeply and honestly to each other.

The majority of healthy relationships do, however, also share some characteristics. No matter what potential challenges or goals you are facing, knowing these principles will make your relationship enjoyable, fulfilling, and exciting.

1. Communication

Communicating with your partner means more than simply telling them what you’re doing that day. Communicating in a way that allows for more emotional connection will make you a better partner.

2. Honesty

A key component of communication is listening. The foundation of a healthy relationship is complete honesty – with one’s feelings and what one’s thinking.

3. Vulnerability

Having open and honest communication in a relationship leads to vulnerability. An unhealthy relationship is one in which you don’t trust your partner to support you regardless of circumstances.

4. Growth

Growth is something that each person can work on in the relationship. It is not a one-sided event. You’ll find out what your improvement areas are if you each take the time to communicate clearly. This doesn’t mean that communication time is the “time to find out what you’re doing wrong.” That is such a small part of it. While each person should be honest, they should also make the effort to communicate how and why they feel a certain way while also focusing on issues instead of the person.

5. Intimacy

Intimacy occurs over time through the creation of sweet memories. A Sunday cuddle on the couch or a walk with your significant other are examples of a sweet memory. Trust and emotional intimacy are a part of the memory. The difference between friendship and love lies in trust and emotional intimacy.

6. Self-love

Healthy relationships are mutual, with room for both people’s needs. If you don’t give yourself the love that you deserve you won’t be able to give love to others.

While these are only a handful of items that make a healthy relationship, they are important to take to heart so you can have the best relationship possible. Your relationship with your significant other shouldn’t be taken lightly. Spend the time required to make it the best it can be.
