When you’re on a date with someone, one of the things you might be asking is how to make the conversation interesting. You want to make sure that your date is enjoying theirself and having fun, rather than falling into an endless pattern of small talk. Plus, it’s hard to get to know someone if you’re just chatting about the weather all day, right?
Here are a few tips for keeping your date’s attention:
This gives them an opportunity to talk about themselves and what they enjoy doing, and it allows them to ask you questions as well. This makes it more of a back and forth rather than a monologue, so it’s more interesting for both of you.
Never be afraid to talk about differences when you’re dating someone. Some people think they should only talk about similarities, but it’s actually the blend of differences and similarities that makes you both interesting people. If you have cultural differences, denominational differences, or even just different favorite ice cream flavors, you’ll find that these differences are interesting — and sometimes surprising!
Use open-ended questions. For example, instead of asking “Do you like dogs?” ask “What is your favorite breed of dog?” You can also slip in a question that requires an explanation, like “How do you feel your walk with God has changed over the years?” This will give your date an opportunity to talk about something they’re passionate about, leading to a more interesting conversation than a string of “yes” and “no” answers.
Between asking deep questions and talking about differences, there are plenty of ways to make conversations interesting. We hope these tips will help you escape the loop of small talk and really get to know your date.
