The Stoicess’ Poem: Meditation on Relationship Nitpicking

February 27, 2023

Meditation on Relationship Nitpicking.

Nitpicking, oh nitpicking, why does it be,
Nitpicking, oh nitpicking, it’s always on me.

It’s the silly things you pick on me for,
a missed comma, misspelled word, an additional space – who hasn’t made such overlooks before!

My competence, my on-time work are never on your radar,
Instead, it’s the little overlook objects that you stab at me for.

You begin with your niceties – all smiles and grins,
Then like a snake hidden in the grass, you strike me in the shins.

Those little things that can be corrected so quickly,
are monstrous in your eyes, causing your demeanor to turn prickly.

Your road to greatness is adorned with preciseness,
Knowing exactly every step so that it can be iterated with such conciseness.

And thinking outside the box is the death knell of a company,
Keeping a cleared desk, a sharp dresser, a meticulous faultfinder – those are the ones you must accompany.

My world is at an end, you say with such harshness,
the problem I’m told is my lack of sharpness.

Getting the little things wrong I must improve on,
for if I cannot catch the simple, my time with this company will soon be forgone.

As the pounding continues, there are answers you demand,
“How could you do this?” you say so sternly, as you make your stand.

I sometimes wonder while listening to you intently,
if I’ve stepped into an alter world like Alice in Wonderland, incidentally.

What first seems so surreal, so unimaginable it may seem,
becomes reality very quickly when your tone turns into a scream.

Such a harsh punishment for a small infraction comes to mind,
should I apologize profusely and promise to do better as I return to the grind?

I then proceeded to meditate on God’s Word,
saw Apostle Paul’s thoughts on how to treat the absurd.

He said we should always view others differently from ourselves,
honoring them before us, even if we work as their elves.

However, if with another one does not fit,
note that Apostle Paul departed from those he was a misfit.

So, then I realized, it is Alice’s world I’ve entered,
For when there’s nothing left to critique me on, nitpicking is the game played by one who’s self-centered.

And here’s the game’s rule in case you’ve forgotten,
“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words”….
Well, you know, their words are always quite rotten.

I now take such moments as being well-timed,
that the stairs to greatness in the other’s eyes I have climbed.

Their prize I have achieved as I dust off my resume,
move forward to my next endeavor from their created archway.

Nitpicking, oh nitpicking, oh how you’ve touched me,
Thank you so much for opening my eyes to clearly see thee.
