Praying from the Heart through Meditation

Believers sometimes express periods of their life where they don’t feel connected to God. Perhaps, they may have had times in their lives when they felt closer to God than they currently do. Others may have never experienced this at all. In all honesty, having a closer walk with God must include prayer, and adding a Christian meditative practice that begins and ends in prayer is most helpful. The process doesn’t mean having a checklist and ticking off the boxes of a time limit or a wish list. That is just as much a heart matter as anything else.

First Things First

First and foremost it is a time to take account of where you stand with God. If you haven’t been praying regularly, it will be important to ask forgiveness for any sins that come to your mind and also for sins you can’t remember. The Bible tells us in 1 John that “if we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make Him out to be a liar and His Word is not in us.” (1 John 1:-8-10) Taking this first step is immensely important since we serve a holy God.

God’s View of Us

We shouldn’t view God as crossing His arms and tapping His toes or letting out a long sigh as if He is aggravated by our coming. In fact, Jesus says in the story of the prodigal son, that the Father ran to greet his son even as He was a great ways off. What Jesus was saying was that He is very pleased when we return to Him. You can clearly see the joy that is brought to God in the story of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son.

(Luke 15:1-32) His view of our coming is no different and the very reason He gave us these parables.

Go On Praying

This first step in prayer opens the door to restoring the regular privilege of prayer in your life. You are coming back to God and you’re bringing matters of the heart before Him. When you pray from the heart, God is there and your prayers will be heard. So go on and pray. Pray about everything in your life and include your thoughts, your emotions, your dreams, where you want to improve in God’s will for your life, and how you can walk a little more like Jesus. Those are the prayers that will bring change in your life and glorify God. And incorporating a daily meditative practice with your prayers will ensure you stay in rhythm each day as well as give much richer sessions with Him.
