What Should You Talk About on Your First Date?

The first date can incite nervousness in anyone, male or female, young or old. Everybody wants to meet expectations and present the best version of themselves, and sometimes that leads to conversation feeling a little stilted. Remember, you’re both here to have fun and learn a little more about each other — you don’t have to dive headfirst into anything too serious. Here are a few topic ideas that are okay to discuss on your first date.

Favorites and Interests

In a world where various forms of entertainment and leisure are easily available, your date will have a favorite book, movie, show, food, music, artist, and so on. Questions about someone’s interests are simple to both ask and answer, and you may even find that you have unexpected common ground.

Hobbies and Ambitions

When you encourage someone to talk about their passions, you’ll often see deep insight into who they are as a person and what they want to do with their life. As a bonus, it can also be incredibly charming to watch someone brighten up when talking about their dreams.

Hometowns and Travel Destinations

You can learn a lot about someone from the places they’ve been and the places they plan to go. Sharing stories of your hometowns can open up discussions about how your childhood experiences are alike or different and how those experiences shaped who you are today. If that feels a bit too personal, asking about their dream vacation can also be a good way to learn more about them.

Faith and God

Religion can be a sensitive topic to some people, which is why it’s good to clarify on the first date. Regardless of whether or not your date follows the same religion as you, you should not feel awkward talking about an integral part of your life. Learning about your date’s relationship with religion and being upfront about your own might just be the deciding factor in ending the first date — or scheduling the second.

It may seem daunting at first to get a conversation going, but you’re only a question or two away from an amazing conversation where you discover more about the person sitting across the table.
