“I’m sorry I was sick yesterday and couldn’t attend”;
“Excuse me, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to get in your way when falling because my hurt leg will sometimes overextend”.
“I’m sorry the wholesaler didn’t have the product in stock”;
“I’m sorry it rained out your gardening day, since it stormed only on your neighborhood block”.
What once was heard as being caring, conscientious words by the recipient’s ears;
Has turned into contentious words in today’s world which can often leave you in tears.
For your statement of apology indicates acceptance of the mishap the listener went through;
You’ll be berated for not controlling the actions of another – even Mother Nature – for which you had no clue.
So, you must now realize that society has changed;
That training by your elders to use the endearing term “I’m sorry”, leads to your relationships becoming estranged.
For what used to be polite is now viewed by others as you not being trustworthy;
Even worse, some take it to the extent of holding you blameworthy.
The Bible teaches us to share our mistakes with others and pray together;
However, taking the blame over which you have no control may indicate you’re not altogether.
Instead, to be accepted in society’s current mainstream;
You must quit over-apologizing to protect your self-esteem.
For what was required by your parents and elders from whence you came;
Doesn’t work any longer where you currently are, because today’s is a different life board game.
So, the next time you feel the urge to use the traditional “I’m sorry” phrase;
train yourself to say “I’m sorry to hear that situation”, – It keeps the focus on the situation, which prevents you and them from getting crossways.
I’m Lori Stith, The Stoicess
AND I believe in YOU.
