“Will you marry me?” the question pops.
Your heart begins to flutter. Excitement overtakes your mind. And then the statement, “You’ll wear my name forever.”
Immediately, the excitement ends. You say, “But I like my name”.
The response? “You must take my name if you want to marry me.”
Whether to take another’s name is a big decision. You love your partner and want to be known as “One”, but you’ve worked hard to create your reputation with your name. You may have a profession where people know you by your surname. It’s the brand for your business and making a name change could lead to confusion for your customers and ultimately lost sales.
From your training with the Stoicess, you know this situation is a very personal decision. You’ve worked hard to establish your reputation. Your surname gives you “strength”. It is one you are very proud to bear.
And you know there is no right or wrong answer here. The Bible is silent on the topic. Neither Adam nor Eve had a last name, and the Old Testament speaks of someone being the “son of another” when establishing identity.
So, the decision of whether to take the name of another is solely up to you. And for the partner that demands you do so, they may place themselves among those that have become the bane of one’s existence.
(S) I’m not sure if I want to take my future partner’s last name when we marry; what should I do?
(T) “The phrase that I use the most to myself in my head is one word: accept.” Naval Ravikant
“See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition.” Apostle Paul
(O) I decided not to take their name right away.
(I) I realized that I had time and could change my name later if that’s what I decide.
(C) The character trait I improved is feeling comfortable with who I am.
When someone demands you take their name, tell them to stop before becoming your bane.
