Arguing over opinions.

It’s a topic of tremendous importance to you over an item that you have partial, but not complete, control. You’re ready to stand your ground and go to the limit to have your way. Whatever the other owner has to say is of minimal importance to you on this topic. It’s my way or the highway in your mind.

“So, what’s the topic?” “What’s the item,” you ask?

It’s my belief on how my child should be raised. “And the other party?” My partner, the other parent, also has an opinion.

Sticky times, I’d say, mainly when neither party is willing to discuss the entire situation thoroughly.

So, you approach such situations with an open mind. Yes, you have a position, but you have thought about the ancillary factors, such as other tasks, that will have to be addressed, knowing that your partner’s help will be needed.

And as the two of you address these ancillary factors, you don’t turn the discussion into one about morals to see who wins.  Unfriendly or bad-tempered comments questioning the sanity of the other, their past poor judgment, or what you don’t like about your partner – “making it Personal” to get your way is not used. From your training with the Stoicess, you know to show respect for your partner to promote keeping the prize, your child, in the forefront of BOTH of your minds.

Besides, many more situations needing your agreement indeed follow. Thus, you always think about the ground you will be standing on ….. tomorrow.

(S) I disagree with my partner on a decision that needs to be made; what do I do?

(T) “Love is not self-seeking.” Apostle Paul

(O) I will discuss the issue with an open mind.

(I) I realized there is no win or lose in the discussion but instead agreeing on how other tasks in our life will be assigned.

(C) I improve my ability to act rationally using love.
