An Update on My New Year’s Resolution

An Update on My New Year’s Resolution.

“Happy New Year!”…. we shout as the Time Square Ball drops. My New Year’s resolution is set! I’m going to get that new Mercedes, lose 10 pounds, and exercise twice a week …. and I’ll start next week.

Well, that was then. It’s now June, and in 6 months nothing has changed.

For most of us, our intentions start out well but fade quickly as the days unfold. Maybe it’s “easier said than done” as the adage goes or maybe others in our lives—our partners, colleagues, bosses, or friends—have resolutions that conflict with our own and cause us to shift our plans midstream.

For me, I start each year with the goal of strengthening my resolve to build my mind for living a happy life. A clear and consistent vision of a happy life becomes my focus. I also reexamine my failures from last year and particularly note those failures occurring from autopilot versus intentional thinking.

My biggest failures? Those shiny material things that I purchase when on autopilot.

It is so easy to get trapped in all the niceties around us, and I must refocus on what is truly important to live a happy life. You see, spending time with our loved ones and making memories is most important. Helping and giving to others of our time and knowledge is where true happiness lasts. Because all the grand toys in the world will never love us back and make us feel wanted in a world filled with chaos.

So, each year, my New Year’s Resolution will NOW BE to renew my vow to serve God by giving my time and knowledge to help others. I’ll thank Him for giving me this gift of life, as I continue building my mind to live a consistent Christian life of carrying on His tradition of love.

Now using My S-T-O-I-C Storytelling Meditation method:

(S) What should be my Stoic Christian New Year’s Resolution?

(T) “We have bound over our souls to pleasure, whose service is the source of all evil.” Seneca
“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” Apostle Paul

(O) I strengthened my resolve to build my mind for living a happy life.

(I) I realized that there are needs and there are wants.

(C) The character trait I improved is being grateful for all I have.

The Stoicess’ Secret:

Strengthening the resolve to build one’s mind is always worth some New Year’s time.
