Stoicess’ Poem: For Better or Worse

For Better or Worse.

It was a job most partners never realized they agreed to,
they’d been married for only a short time when this new job came due.

One partner began not feeling so great,
a few days later, an ER visit became necessary with a very long wait.

Things were more serious than either had initially thought,
that hospital visit led to a finding that caused each of them much distraught.

“For better or worse” were the promised words spoken so few days prior,
neither of them thought their contract would be tested so soon with a situation so dire.

The sweet dreams of the relationship, the joys of marital bliss,
are such times gone forever for us before we had the chance to share love’s sweet kiss?

Each day slowly passed as his inner strength diminished,
bills were piling up – could this relationship just started now be finished?

The breaking point he was now reaching,
the thoughts of a painful future being quite far-reaching.

Should he stay and bear through such a discomforting life,
or throw in the towel and simply seek another more healthy wife?

The promised words he made weighed heavily on his mind,
did he mean what he said, or were the words not that well-defined?

But he came to his senses, and his heart took over control,
the promise he made was not to just anyone, but his most trusted friend, truth to be told.

So, despite her frailty or diminished good looks that likely would ensue,
he stayed by his friend, who knows his mind better than anyone he ever knew.

For his words of promise were made to his God above,
the only audience he cared to hear, as he stated for her his great love.

And as the days together dwindled and soon after became no more,
his best friend ever he had for such a short time, gave him the most blessed moments forevermore.

When his own life ended four score later to the mark,
he had remained single – never seeking another with which to embark.

Because in his mind, he had the very best, for him, that God had to give,
such a short time together, but a life that could not be better lived.
